How to Avoid Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is a serious problem; distracted drivers are three times more likely to get into an accident. This is a major safety issue that goes far beyond texting or using your phone, and every driver is responsible for remaining alert and safe while on the road.

No matter how tempting it may be, you need to avoid distractions while driving by doing the following:

Make sure you’re comfortable before you start driving

Adjust your mirrors, seat setting, temperature setting and radio station so that you don’t have to do any of these things while driving. Get comfortable before you back out of your driveway, so you don’t have to fiddle with anything.

Put away your phone

Talking and texting while driving is extremely dangerous, putting you and other drivers at risk. Using your phone is one of the most dangerous things you can do behind the wheel, so do not answer calls or respond to text messages until you park safely at your intended location. If you struggle in this regard, turn your phone off while in your car or put it somewhere difficult to reach. It’s important to note that even hands-free talking is distracting, so when you’re driving, focus only on driving and nothing else.

Do not reach for anything

If you drop something, just leave it. Reaching for your wallet, purse, or anything else can lead to dangerous consequences, so just leave it and wait until you reach your destination. Drivers are likelier to crash when reaching for an object, so don’t panic and wait. If the dropped item falls in a dangerous spot under your brake or gas pedal, pull over safely as soon as possible to pick it up.

Do not eat while you drive

Eat before you drive because this can cause you to lose your concentration, and you may crash into another vehicle. No matter how convenient eating on the go may be, it can lead to disaster, so do not eat while you’re behind the wheel.

Do not get ready in your car

Fixing your hair, doing your makeup, fixing your tie or adjusting your outfit are not things you should do in your car, so get ready before you leave. If a jacket feels uncomfortable, remove it before you start to drive so that you’re not trying to shuffle out of it in your car. These kinds of activities can distract you, so you will not be able to focus on what’s happening around you.

Keep your eyes on the road at all times

Storefronts, pedestrians and billboards can all be very distracting, but you must keep your eyes on the prize. Always look at what is in front of you and pay attention to what other cars are doing. You need to remain alert to do this, and staying focused will allow you to spot potential dangers.

Distracted driving can lead to dangerous situations and even life-threatening accidents. Such behaviour will also affect your car insurance rate, so you must prioritize safety at all times.
