All drivers in Alberta will have to renew their license plate and vehicle at some point, and you will have to know what to do when the time comes.
Concerning the costs, this will depend on the term. Your fee will be different for a passenger vehicle for 12 months compared to someone registering for a different length of time. In that case, the cost will be prorated. If any changes need to be made to the account, the account holder must be present in the office as you will have to sign off on the changes, which can include a new address, phone number, or lease status.
In Alberta, you can renew for someone else’s registration if you have proof of insurance, a digital or paper copy of the registration and your driver’s license. If the registration has expired for three months or longer, the vehicle owner will have to provide you with a Vehicle Authorization Form, without which you will not be able to make any changes to their account.
What About Fines?
If any fines on your account are overdue, you will have to pay them off before you renew your plate. The cost will include the original fine, late fees, and a service fee per ticket.
Can I Complete My License Plate and Vehicle Renewal Online?
You can renew your license plate and vehicle online if you have all the necessary paperwork. If you renew online, your new Vehicle Registration Certificate will be available as a PDF document from My Alberta eServices. You must check under “My Account,” then “My Digital Downloads.” The same service fee is applied to all renewals, whether you complete the process online, in person at a registry office, or through post.
If you receive an error message when trying to renew your vehicle online, your renewal did not meet the conditions for an online transaction. If your online renewal is not working for you, you will have to visit a registry agent in person to have your transaction successfully processed. Be prepared to have documentation with you when you visit in person.
Vehicle Renewal: Reasons for Rejection
Certain conditions may cause a rejection of your renewal. These include:
- Changes to your address or other information on your vehicle registration within the past year.
- Your registration has been expired for more than 12 months prior to today’s date.
- Changes in ownership or lease information.
- Outstanding fines, maintenance enforcement restrictions or outstanding motor vehicle debt.
