Drive Safe with RV & Motorhome Insurance From Your Alberta Insurance Experts
A couple from Edmonton, Alberta were going on a long road trip with their 32 foot motorhome, while driving down the I-10 a sudden huge wind gust came up from nowhere, and caught the motorhomes awning. It completely ripped off and hit the car behind them. The insured where lucky as they had the right coverage. The Insurance Company not only repaired the awning at a location in the United States so that they could continue on their trip, but also covered all the damage to the car that was behind them.

What are the Mandatory Coverages for RV Insurance?
In Alberta, RV insurance includes several mandatory coverages to protect drivers.
Liability coverage
Liability coverage is required to cover costs if you’re found at fault in an accident, providing protection for property damage, injury, or death.
Accident Benefits coverage
Accident Benefits coverage is mandatory and helps cover medical expenses, bodily injuries, rehabilitation, and other costs for you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault.
Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD)
Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD) covers damage to your RV if you’re not at fault, allowing for repairs or replacement without involving the other party’s insurer.
What are the Optional and Other Coverages for RV Insurance?
In Alberta, RV owners have access to various optional coverages to enhance their protection.
Collision coverage
Collision coverage covers repair costs if your RV is damaged in an accident, regardless of fault.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive coverage goes beyond collisions, protecting your RV/ Motor Home against non-accident-related incidents like theft, fire, vandalism, lightning, explosions, and more.
All Perils insurance / Specified Perils
For broader protection, All Perils insurance combines both collision and comprehensive coverages, or you can opt for Specified Perils to choose only the risks you want to insure.
RV Contents Insurance
RV Contents Insurance safeguards household items within your RV, making it a valuable option for those who use their RV as a primary residence.
Some things to consider when purchasing a Motor home Insurance policy are:
- Value – Do have your motorhome/trailer insured for the right value? When purchasing a policy for these items there a multiple choices for how you insure the physical damage. These would include:
- Guaranteed Replacement cost – When you have this coverage you need to make sure you are insuring your motorhome or trailer at the cost of a brand new unit of like kind and quality.
- Replacement Cost – this is the cost to replace your motorhome with the same unit and needs to be insured for its current value.
- Actual cash value – which is replacement cost less depreciation, this type of coverage is better served for those older trailers, and motorhomes.
- Detached Structures – if you set up shop when you camp, haul out that Barbecue, or set up a seating area these items can be insured as detached structures on your Edmonton RV Insurance policy. Some of our more specialized carriers will include detached structures at no additional cost to the consumer.
- Liability – while hauling a trailer the liability would extend from the towing vehicle, but what about while its parked and not hooked up to your truck? With Motorhomes these are usually insured like a vehicle, but do you add this to your current auto policy, or do you have the liability on the same policy as the physical damage.
What are the different class types of RVs and their effects on insurance costs?
RVs come in three primary classes—Class A, Class B, and Class C—each impacting insurance costs differently due to their size and use:

Class A RV & Motorhomes
Class A Motorhomes are the largest and most luxurious, often used as full-time homes. Because of their size, value, and home-like features, they are the most expensive to insure, and it’s wise to invest in additional coverage if you plan to live in one.

Class B RV & Motorhomes
Class B Motorhomes, often called “Camper Vans,” are compact and typically used for short trips, leading to lower insurance costs.

Class C RV & Motorhomes
Class C Motorhomes strike a balance between Class A and B, offering many of the amenities of Class A in a more moderate size, resulting in insurance costs that usually fall between the two.
FAQs
What types of RV / Motor Homes do you insure?
At Leibel Insurance, we can get you coverage for a wide variety of RVs and motorhomes, including campers, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and more. No matter the type, we’ll make sure you’re properly protected on the road and at the campsite.
Is RV Insurance Mandatory?
RV insurance is not legally mandatory, but going without it is a big risk.If your RV is financed, the finance company will need you to insure it though. Without coverage, you leave your RV vulnerable to damage, theft, or accidents—without any financial protection to cover the costs. It’s always safer to insure your investment.
How do RV Insurance rates compare to Car Insurance?
RV insurance is typically cheaper than car insurance because insurers know RVs aren’t used for daily driving like regular cars. Since they spend more time parked and are on the road less often, they’re considered lower risk, resulting in generally lower premiums.
Do I need to insure my RV year round?
Even if you only use your RV seasonally, we recommend keeping it insured year-round. Your RV can still be vulnerable to risks like theft, vandalism, or unexpected damage—even in storage. It’s always better to stay protected than risk costly surprises.
What does RV / Motor Home Insurance typically not cover?
RV/Motor Home Insurance typically doesn’t cover general wear and tear, damage caused by pests or pets, fungi or pollutant damage, or any intentional or illegal acts. It’s important to understand these exclusions to avoid unexpected costs.
